ABOUT DAN

Dan grew up in a small city in central New York on Lake Ontario and lived there with his parents, Paul and Patricia Furman, and three siblings. He graduated from Oswego High School with a Regents diploma in 1983. After a few attempts at college and a full-time job, Dan decided to enter the military in 1991. After completing boot camp, Dan attended Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT. Dan’s follow-on tour was being stationed on his first of four nuclear submarines. Following his tour on board the USS Alexandria SSN 757, Dan was off to Newport, RI, to do research and development for U.S. and Foreign Combat Control Systems.

In 2000 Dan graduated from Excelsior College earning an AAS degree in Engineering Technologies. In 2001 Dan was called away from Newport and assigned to his second submarine, the USS Providence SSN 719. He was short-cycled and told to meet the ship, which was forward deployed. While deployed and finally headed home, a message came and directed the ship back to the Persian Gulf, not realizing the devastation that happened on 911. The submarine was called to the firing line. While acting as the Fire Control Technician leading Petty Officer, we successfully launched 26 cruise missiles in retaliation into Afghanistan. Following our attack, we were sent back home to Groton, CT. Dan then learned in 2002 he was advanced to Chief Petty Officer and reassigned to the USS Albuquerque SSN 706. Following his tour on the Albuquerque, Dan was sent to become the COMSUBLANT Representative at Electric Boat, Groton, CT to oversee the building of the new class submarine and training of the crews prior to the ship’s commissioning. This is when Dan and wife, Stacy, adopted their son, Corey, from the DCF system in CT.
Recognizing Dan’s talent and experience, the Navy sent Dan to be the Fire Control Leading Chief Petty Officer, Weapons Department Leading Chief and First Lieutenant during the construction of the USS New Hampshire SSN 778. Following the commissioning of the New Hampshire and completion of her maiden deployment Dan was reassigned to the Regional Support Group Groton, CT, where he served as the Weapons Material Officer until his retirement in April of 2011.

While on shore duty in 2010, Dan earned a BS degree from Excelsior College in Liberal Arts. Following retirement, Dan briefly held a job until he was contacted by a tenant command at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in October 2011. Dan accepted a position at the Shipyard working for SUBMEPP. At SUBMEPP, Dan worked as an Engineering Technician. While serving at SUBMEPP, his job was to facilitate workshops that involved various individuals from many activities having to reach consensus on very specific topics, which were near and dear to many participants. He was able to successfully complete over 100 workshops resulting in millions of dollars in savings involving US Navy Submarine maintenance.
Dan retired in 2022 from the shipyard and worked as an Engineering Technician and Task Manager for a company in Dover, NH. While living in Dover, Dan has been active in the community through youth sports by coaching, volunteering, and holding various board member positions for youth hockey. In addition, Dan served as the Vice Commander at Post 8 American Legion in Dover and currently serves as the Sargent at Arms and the Child and Youth Coordinator at Post 8..
